Outpatient Alcohol and Drug Rehab

Addiction Treatment That Works

Life's everyday challenges and responsibilities don't magically disappear when you begin a drug addiction treatment program. And yet, effective drug rehab requires all-out commitment, careful attention and new ways of living that take focus, practice and patience.

Our day treatment (partial hospitalization) and intensive outpatient program (IOP)—offered both in person and virtually—equip you with the knowledge, skills, accountability and support to successfully navigate both worlds, simultaneously.

Hazelden Betty Ford clinicians specialize in dual-enhanced treatment for co-occurring disorders, which means all interrelated symptoms of substance use and other mental health challenges are addressed at the same time, within the same program, and by the same care team.

One year after treatment, 74 percent of our patients report being sober

Do I need treatment? How to tell?

Addiction affects your physical, emotional and social health and well-being. So a place to start is to ask yourself whether your substance use might be contributing to a new or worsening health condition, or difficulties at work, or challenges with family/friends—or just your ability to cope.

Hazelden Betty Ford care navigators can help you get a better sense of what's going on and how treatment could help. Confidentially and at no cost, our care navigators have the expertise to answer your questions about addiction recovery, explain the types of treatment and mental health services available, and discuss possible next steps.

Do you have sober housing in St. Paul?

Yes, in combination with either our day treatment program or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), you have the option of living on campus in our warm and welcoming sober residence. Living on site in our sober community provides you with added support and focus as you gain ground in recovery.

Our day treatment program with sober housing gives you the highest outpatient level of care. With a treatment plan tailored to address your unique situation and struggles, day treatment incorporates educational and therapeutic sessions designed to help you build and strengthen:

  • Coping skills
  • Resilience
  • Accountability
  • Initiative

Day treatment with sober housing is an ideal treatment level if you:

  • Have experienced a recent relapse
  • Are transitioning out of an inpatient or residential treatment program
  • Struggle with symptoms of a co-occurring mental health condition, such as anxiety or depression

Especially in early recovery, staying in a sober living community can make all the difference in terms of accountability, motivation and connection.

Does Hazelden Betty Ford have on-site detox in St. Paul?

We do not provide alcohol or drug detox at our St. Paul facility, but our Center City and Plymouth inpatient treatment centers are equipped with medical units and staffed to provide detox services.

Does virtual care work for addiction treatment?

For Hazelden Betty Ford patients enrolled in virtual IOP, online access to care has been shown to improve participation rates because attendance is so convenient.

Technology has opened the door to treatment for more people than ever. Online treatment can be an ideal alternative if you have accessibility or mobility challenges or if you're not located near our St. Paul treatment clinic or other Hazelden Betty Ford treatment facilities in Minnesota.

Our virtual and in-person intensive outpatient treatment programs meet weekday mornings or evenings so you can continue to manage work and family responsibilities while participating in drug rehab.

When beginning our IOP program, you will typically be scheduled for four sessions a week that meet for three hours a day. As clinical milestones are met, you will attend less frequently.

In IOP, you will work with the same addiction counselor throughout the course of treatment rather than change counselors at different stages or phases along the way. This "one counselor" approach provides you with attentive and individualized continuity of care.

Why do you have a specialized program for opioid treatment?

Opioid use disorder brings unique challenges and difficulties that can potentially undermine your engagement in rehab. With a comprehensive and individualized approach, our evidence-based opioid addiction rehab program incorporates special-focus group sessions, educational workshops and, if clinically determined, the use of medication-assisted treatment to ease the discomfort of withdrawal and reduce drug cravings.

Are your clinicians trained in culturally responsive care specifically for the LGBTQIA+ community?

Yes. Hazelden Betty Ford clinicians at our St. Paul treatment center receive training in culturally responsive care with a focus on the rehab and recovery support needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. People who identify as LGBTQIA+ have higher rates of substance use disorder than the population as a whole, due in part to societal stigma and related trauma. With an affirming, compassionate and inclusive approach, our programming addresses issues that can interfere with recovery.

Dual-Enhanced Care for Co-occurring Disorders

Substance use issues are often compounded by other mental health conditions. The combination and complexity of symptoms can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. For example, the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder can become more severe with drug use. Conversely, substance use issues can intensify as symptoms of PTSD worsen.

Expert clinicians at Hazelden Betty Ford work in concert to address all the complexities within the same dual-enhanced treatment program. In this way, all interrelated symptoms and challenges are addressed at the same time, within the same program and with the same care team (addiction counselors, mental health therapists and medical professionals).
