Dual Diagnosis Rehab

Outpatient Alcohol and Drug Treatment

Tailored to meet your specific behavioral health needs, our outpatient addiction treatment programs empower you to get well and equip you to stay well. As you progress through your treatment plan, you will work closely with your addiction counselor to continually adjust the frequency and focus of your care.

If you are experiencing co-occurring mental health challenges related to anxiety, trauma or depression, Hazelden Betty Ford staff will coordinate mental health care to align with your treatment plan. Our clinicians are well-versed in evidence-based treatment approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.

Unlike most other outpatient rehab clinics in Illinois, Hazelden Betty Ford in Chicago has medical professionals (psychiatrist, nurse practitioner) on staff as well as addiction counselors and mental health therapists to provide you with expert, synchronized and comprehensive care.

How can I tell if I need treatment?

A helpful place to start is to ask yourself if your alcohol or drug use could be contributing to difficulties you've been experiencing, like relationship troubles, issues at work or new or worsening health conditions. These are clues that your substance use might be impacting your ability to cope or function well—and that you might benefit from treatment.

To get an even better perspective, contact a Hazelden Betty Ford care navigator. Confidentially and at no cost, our care navigators can help assess your situation, share the types of behavioral health programs and services we offer in Illinois, and guide you in determining the most-effective next steps.

You can also ask our care navigators about the different levels and components of addiction rehab available at our Chicago, Illinois, treatment facility, including:

  • Day treatment (partial hospitalization/PHP) - An especially effective outpatient rehab level if you've experienced a recent relapse or you've made multiple previous attempts at an inpatient or outpatient drug rehabilitation center
  • Intensive outpatient treatment/IOP (In person and virtual) - An ideal level of care if you are completely new to addiction treatment or you are transitioning out of a residential/inpatient addiction treatment setting
  • Low intensity outpatient treatment – An ideal level of programming as you transition from clinical care and incorporate recovery skills into your daily life: building new routines, strengthening your sober support network and recognizing/addressing substance abuse triggers

Why do you have special-focus groups to address trauma and addiction?

There is a strong correlation between trauma and addiction. Many people who are diagnosed with a substance use disorder also have a history of trauma. Our special-focus, trauma-informed groups provide a safe and supportive setting for you to:

  • Talk about past trauma and its impact on your daily life
  • Explore the connection between trauma and addiction
  • Cope with thoughts and emotions related to your history of trauma
  • Learn and practice grounding and self-soothing techniques

Participating in a trauma-informed group during rehab could make all the difference in your recovery journey.

Does Hazelden Betty Ford provide detox services in Chicago?

We do not provide drug or alcohol detox services at our Chicago outpatient clinic, but our residential treatment centers in Minnesota, California and Oregon have fully staffed medical units for detoxification services.

Due to the unpredictable and potentially severe side effects of alcohol and other drug withdrawal, it's important to seek out medical advice about the detoxification process. Detox services are often required before starting an addiction rehab program because the process helps to ease withdrawal symptoms and reduce drug cravings so you can focus your attention and energy on treatment.

Does telehealth or virtual treatment work for addiction?

Video conferencing technologies have opened the doors to treatment and therapy to more people than ever—and it's made all the difference for many people seeking help. Hazelden Betty Ford's virtual programs are a great fit if you have accessibility or mobility challenges or you aren't located near Chicago.

For some Hazelden Betty Ford patients, access to virtual treatment has improved participation rates because attendance is so convenient.

Our Chicago-based virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP) incorporates evidence-based behavioral health therapies, Twelve Step principles and practices, and the latest scientific research about addiction recovery. Your care plan will be based on bio/psycho/social assessments and will include individual therapy, group sessions and sober living skill-building.

Integrated Treatment for Co-occurring Disorders

Substance use issues are often accompanied by other mental health conditions. The interplay of symptoms can make diagnosis and treatment complicated. For example, symptoms of an anxiety disorder can become more severe with alcohol or other drug use. Likewise, substance abuse can intensify as symptoms of anxiety worsen.

Hazelden Betty Ford clinicians specialize in dual diagnosis and dual-enhanced treatment of co-occurring disorders. Mental health therapies are fully integrated into your treatment plan and services are provided by psychiatrists, addiction counselors and mental health professionals who have expertise in co-occurring disorders.
