What happens at drug and alcohol detox centers?
Withdrawal from alcohol and/or other drugs can feel complicated and unpredictable. At Hazelden Betty Ford, detox is medically managed and monitored to ease withdrawal symptoms and relieve cravings. This ensures a safe and comfortable withdrawal process so you're in a better place physically and emotionally to begin inpatient alcohol rehab or inpatient drug treatment. We offer drug and alcohol detox services for patients aged 18 and older at our Center City location.
Does telehealth or virtual care work for addiction treatment?
Online healthcare technologies have opened the door to addiction and mental health treatment for more people than ever. For many Hazelden Betty Ford patients, virtual care options have improved participation rates because attendance is more convenient.
Online counseling sessions can be an ideal alternative if you have accessibility or mobility challenges or if you're not located near our Center City, Minnesota campus. Our virtual addiction treatment programs are built with the same evidence-based interventions as our in-person rehab programs.
Integrated Care for Co-occurring Disorders
Substance use issues are typically accompanied by other mental health conditions. The mix and complexity of symptoms can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. For example, the symptoms of depression can become more severe with drinking or other drug use. Likewise, substance use issues can intensify as symptoms of depression worsen.
Hazelden Betty Ford clinicians specialize in dual diagnosis and treatment of co-occurring disorders. Mental health care is fully integrated into your individualized treatment plan and is provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and addiction counselors who have expertise in treating co-occurring disorders.
Outpatient Mental Health Services
Substance use issues are typically accompanied by other mental health conditions. The mix and complexity of symptoms can make diagnosis and treatment challenging.
Mental health services at Hazelden Betty Ford are available to individuals 12 years of age and older on an outpatient basis.
Our licensed mental health team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors. We provide the following mental health services:
- Screenings and assessments
- Individual therapy and counseling
- Special-focus group therapy
- Medication coordination

Visiting Hours:
Wednesdays:
6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Open Visiting, all units.
Sundays and Holidays:
1-5:00 p.m. Open Visiting, all units.
Visitor Expectations:
- Masks are now optional while indoors during the entire visit. If you would like a mask, it can be provided upon check in.
- Confidentiality of all patients is to be respected; no cameras are allowed on campus and no picture taking is allowed on our campus.
- Parking is available in our Visitor designated parking lots only.
- Please do not arrive prior to the designated visiting time.
- Please leave promptly when the designated visiting time is over.
- Check in and register at the Cork Center every time you visit our campus.
- Please wear our Visitor badge /Name Tag at all times while on campus.
- Please review the restricted items list to make sure you are not bringing unacceptable items onto our campus. Items will need to be checked prior to the patient receiving them. A completed Good Faith Form will be required when checking them in and a Patient Care Technician will search all packages before given to patients. Any prescriptions or medications are to be brought to the Front Admissions Desk to be checked in.
- Patients may bring their visitor(s) to their Unit.
- Patients may escort their visitor(s) to the playground area, outside walking trails (only during the designated visiting hours.
- Hazelden Betty Ford does not offer cafeteria services, but there are vending machines and coffee available in the Cork Center.
- Pets are not allowed on our campus; though service animals are welcome.
- Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, roller skates/blades or battery operated/remote control vehicles are not allowed on our campus.
- Patients are not allowed in the parking lots, visitor vehicles, or to be taken off campus during visiting hours.
Getting to Campus
Arriving by Plane
- Please schedule your flight to arrive by Noon Central.
- At MSP International Airport Terminal 1, Hazelden Betty Ford transportation services will pick you up at Baggage Claim Carousel 13-14.
- At MSP International Airport Terminal 2 (Sun Country, Southwest, Frontier, Allegiant, JetBlue, Icelandair), Hazelden Betty Ford transportation services will meet you at the terminal.
- If flying into a regional airport/private charter, Hazelden Betty Ford transportation services will meet you at the gate.
- It may be up to a two-hour pick-up wait if you choose to use Hazelden Betty Ford transportation services.
Arriving by Vehicle
- Please arrive on campus as early as possible, preferably before 1 p.m. Central
- Once on campus, follow signs to Admissions and park in one of the designated parking lots for patients and families.
- Enter through the main entrance. Feel free to bring your luggage with you. Please let our receptionist know if you would like assistance with your luggage.
Nearby Lodging
There are several local hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and inns near our Center City addiction treatment center. Ask for Hazelden Betty Ford preferred rates when making reservations nearby.

Service Animal Policy
Service animals are permitted in Hazelden Betty Ford facilities, and we afford individuals who require the assistance of a service animal with equal opportunity to access the organization. Per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a "service animal" is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.
Per the ADA, dogs or other animals whose sole function is to provide comfort, emotional support, or companionship do not qualify as service animals. Emotional support, therapy animals, and pets are not permitted at Hazelden Betty Ford facilities, leased spaces, or on campus grounds.
