Tour our Plymouth center for behavioral health with Sara and Steve who will give you an inside look at what treatment is—and isn't.
Available in-person and virtually, our IOP level of care provides your teen with an individualized treatment plan that incorporates counseling for ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma or other co-occurring mental health issues they may be experiencing along with substance use issues.
The number of treatment sessions each week and the length of programming/services are based on your teen's specific clinical needs. As they develop and strengthen healthy practices and gain more experience in recovery, the number of IOP sessions will decrease.
As the most intensive level of outpatient care, our adolescent day treatment program involves 20-30 hours of individual and group activities and appointments a week. This treatment level can be an ideal bridge from the 24/7 care and accountability of an inpatient program, or—based on your teen's needs and circumstances--it can be a great level to first come into treatment.
Your teen will have the best of both worlds: Integrated mental health and substance use treatment along with a supportive peer community to belong to while living at home. (Some of our day treatment patients choose to live on campus, which can be a helpful option for families to consider.)
Day treatment (known medically as partial hospitalization) can also be an effective level of care if your teen has experienced multiple treatment or recovery attempts. Our care teams will develop a highly personalized treatment plan to meet you where you are today and offer a new path forward.
Our inpatient behavioral health treatment center is ideal if your child is struggling with ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief or trauma in addition to substance use issues. Our specialized care teams address mental health challenges and substance use issues concurrently because the conditions and symptoms are interrelated.
Residential patients begin treatment in our medical unit where our physicians and nurses monitor the detoxification process and provide medications to ease any withdrawal discomfort or drug cravings. Our adolescent patients live in gender-specific (male-identifying or female-identifying) residential wings with other teens (ages 12-18), and follow a daily schedule of therapeutic, educational and wellness activities and appointments (psychiatrist, psychologist, addiction counselor) individualized to meet their recovery needs. Mental health groups are tailored to address the challenges faced by teens and their families in early recovery, with a focus on practical social and behavioral skills like communication, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and relapse prevention.
As an integral part of our programs, we embrace your whole family in the healing journey—with education, counseling and support to help you strengthen communication and rebuild relationships.
As your teen progresses in residential treatment, their care team will continually assess and adjust their plan based on clinical and behavioral milestones.

Expert care (psychiatrists, psychologists, addiction counselors). Peer connection. Convenient scheduling. Our outpatient treatment programs come in different levels and intensities (day treatment/partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment/IOP and virtual rehab for teenagers). Look into what might be the right fit for you.
Take minute to think about how your alcohol/drug use or mental health symptoms (or a combination of those factors) could be contributing to relationship issues or work/school responsibilities. That's a clue to take a closer look at how your ability to cope or function well is being affected—and consider how you might benefit from treatment.
To get an even better idea, you can talk with a Hazelden Betty Ford care navigator who, confidentially and at no cost, will help assess your situation, share the types of care and services we offer specifically for young adults, and guide you in determining next steps, including admission to one of our outpatient or inpatient programs, if appropriate.
Feel free to ask our care navigators any questions you might have about the different types, intensities and aspects of treatment. We have a full range of addiction treatment programs and mental health services geared specifically to young adults at our Plymouth, Minnesota, campus:
Our care navigators can also tell you more about our teen rehabilitation program for opioid use disorder, which initially focuses on helping you through opioid withdrawal, reducing discomfort and minimizing drug cravings so you can focus on treatment goals and activities.
